Have you ever found yourself watching Batman and wishing you could be a little more like Bruce Wayne? Have you ever looked at James Bond and thought “Man, I’d love to be that guy…” At the Gentleman Badass Podcast, we believe there’s a James Bond or a Bruce Wayne inside every man. The problem is, many men don’t know where to find him. I know I didn’t. After years of poor eating habits and a lack of exercise, I’d found myself fat, out of shape, and completely unhappy with my life. I knew I needed to change but I didn’t know where to start. It was by accident that I walked into Mick Doyle’s Gym. I’d heard from a friend they had the toughest workouts in Omaha and that some famous UFC fighters had trained there, but other than that, I was clueless. Despite being intimidated as hell, I walked through the doors and never looked back.
What I learned over the next eight years, and what I’m continuing to learn to this day are lessons that transformed my body and my life. Jiu Jitsu taught me humility, how to deal with discomfort, and how to defend myself. Muay Thai taught me how to take a punch and keep moving forward, but what really surprised me was how all of these lessons combined to influence my life outside of the gym. Once I was used to fighting off chokes and claustrophobia, an uncomfortable meeting with my boss didn’t seem all that difficult. Once I was used to standing to face my opponent, approaching strangers at a party wasn’t nearly as intimidating. Once I’d learned how to capitalize on my failures, my fear of failure all but disappeared. Once I’d learned true humility on the mats, completing my wife’s “honey do” list no longer seemed like an affront to my manhood.
If any of this sounds familiar, I think you’ll like what we’re putting together on the Gentleman Badass Podcast. Not only will you get the chance to hear from me and my mentor Mick Doyle (two time World Champion Muay Thai fighter, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, and a guy who’s personally coached Conor McGregor and Gunnar Nelson) but you’ll also get to hear from our top-notch guests who are all on their own journeys of Gentleman Badassery.
